About ego
ego (also written egoapp) is an iPhone app that plans your strength training and counts your calories in one place. It's made by Robert Gadeev, an independent developer based in Paris, France. The first version reached the App Store on October 3, 2025.
Who's behind it
Robert Gadeev designs and builds ego: the iPhone app, the server that builds training plans and reads meal photos, and this website. He also writes the guides on this site. ego is a one-person company, so an email to robert@egoapp.fit reaches him directly.
How the guides are written
- Claims about ego are checked against the app. Before a guide says what ego does, for example what happens to a workout you skip, the behavior is checked in the app itself. If the app doesn't do it, the guide doesn't say it.
- Claims about other apps link to their source. Prices and features come from the vendor's own pages or App Store listing, linked in the text, with US prices and the date they were checked.
- Research is cited, not paraphrased from memory. When a guide quotes a number from a study, it links the paper.
- Every guide shows when it was last updated. Mistakes are fixed when reported, and the date changes with the fix.
The guides explain training and nutrition for healthy adults. They aren't medical advice: if you're pregnant, have a medical condition or take medication that affects appetite or weight, talk to your doctor before changing how you eat or train.
How ego's numbers work
- Calorie targets start from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and your activity level: 80% of your daily burn to lose fat, 110% to gain, and never below 1,500 calories a day. The goal date calculator uses the same rules.
- Meal estimates come from an AI model that reads your photo or description. Portion size is the main source of error, so every estimate can be edited before you save it, and packaged food can be scanned by barcode instead. More on accuracy in How Accurate Are AI Calorie Counters?
- Working weights are suggested per exercise to leave about 2 reps in reserve, and they update from the sets you log. See how ego picks your working weights.
